There’s certainly more of a chill in the air these days and as we slowly see the leaves changing we should feel exciting for the season ahead and all it has to offer; golden leaves, warm hats, wellie boots, and a cosy sense that deep down is oddly comforting! Winter is most certainly here!
That said here in North Wexford we have an abundance of walks both coastal and rural to enjoy so let’s explore some of what’s on offer!
With echoes of the summer, there’s no better spot than the beautiful Morriscastle beach close to the village of Kilmuckridge to blow away the cobwebs. The beach responds to the sea with ever-changing sand dunes and debris that both children and adults love discovering!
The Red Trail on the stunning Tara Hill begins at the Tara Hill Cemetery and provides a parking spot! Explore the country laneways which in turn showcase some of the most picturesque coastal views on offer in North Wexford! Along the route you will find remains of our rich past like the 1798 graveyard, there are also Stations of the Cross where locals used to come and pray in remembrance of times past. This route takes approx. 1 hour and is 3 miles long!
The Gibbet Hill walk near Bunclody offers a far more tranquil feeling than it’s name! Gibbet is an old English name for Hanging Hill hinting at the sense of history to the area where it is thought executions took place, it was thought that this venue was chosen as the beautiful views meant no matter what the crime your last view on earth was to be heavenly! There are three looped walks to climb to Gibbet Hill and range in distance from 3 miles to just over 8 but after a steady climb to the top there are breathtaking views on offer!
Ferns Village is the perfect opportunity for walkers to explore some of the most beautiful countryside in North Wexford and walk in the steps of warriors and kings while visiting heritage sites linked to the most significant changes in Irish History! Once the Ancient Capital of Ireland explore St. Aidan’s Holy Well, the 12th century St. Mary’s Abbey or the 13th century Ferns Castle as part of your walk!
Courtown Woods offers four routes so depending on energy levels and ability this is a great choice if you feel like a forest hike is for you! The Owenavorragh River on the north side and the canal on the seaward side to the east provide the perfect backdrop to these historic woodlands that date back to pre-Famine times and were used by Lords and Ladies of Courtown and their visitors! Time your visit and collect some of the pretty conkers that line the ground and go home to play a fun game that will bring back wonderful childhood memories!
There is plenty to do and see in our beautiful North Wexford! Get out and about and enjoy what we have on our doorstep then enjoy a hearty, well-earned lunch beside a fire in a pub! Remember a Sunday well spent brings a week of content!
