This guided walk will focus on the area around theCathedral and Abbey, an area rich in Christian/Medieval history with monuments of national importance and stories from the arrival of St. Aidan in the 6th century to the arrival of theNormans in the 12th.
Apart from being renowned as the Ancient Capital of Leinster, Ferns is also known as the Gateway to Norman Wexford. Ousted King of Leinster, Diarmuid MacMurrough set off from Ferns to seek help from Henry II to assist him in regaining his Kingship. This resulted in the arrival of the Normans in 1169.
The village of Ferns is rich in history. Evidence of settlement goes back to the Bronze age. This tour covers a section of the Ferns Village Heritage Trail focusing on the northern section. The larger heritage trail includes a range of monuments and sites of interest, touching on historic events from 1798 to 1916.
The iconic Ferns Castle, a Norman castle built in the 13th century, is linked to many famous names and events in the medieval period. The castle is run by the OPW and is currently closed for the season, due to open again in May. If you would like to visit other monuments and sites not listed on this tour, please get in touch and we will try and accommodate you.
