HISTORY
The first Wexfordians are thought to date as far back as 5000BC, so Gorey holds a lot of history!
Just outside of Gorey, lies the picturesque village of Ferns, which is steeped in history as far back as the 6th century. There are so many beautiful feats of architecture including St. Mary’s Abbey, founded by Dermot MacMurrogh in 1158, St. Peters Church and St. Edan’s Cathedral. Don’t forget to visit the 13th Century Ferns Castle!
If you want to have fun by the sea side then Courtown is a must see. It is one of the most beautiful and unspoiled seaside resorts on the south east coast. You won’t find fresher sea food anywhere else! And Courtown also enjoys one of the lowest annual rainfall in the South East. Sunshine, sea and sand, what more could you ask for?
From the stained glass windows of Christ Church in Gorey to the seaside harbour in Courtown and of course the majestic castle in the village of Ferns. There is so much history that weaves Gorey, Ferns and Courtown together. Although some things may have changed with time, these places still have so much to offer. They have managed to change with the times but also hold onto their own proud history and heritage. Whether your interests lie in churches, tapestries or fishing, Gorey, Ferns and Courtown have it all!
