Gorey Tidy Towns recently reached a few milestones in some ongoing projects during November 2019.
We set up camp at the Gorey Civic Square pavilion in mid-November to distribute 400 trees to the public. On the same day, we unveiled the town’s new bottle refill stations; Kate Kos finished work on new her Tidy Towns mural; and the following week, we presented an oak tree to each of the seven schools in Gorey to celebrate Gorey 400.
Three refill stations have been installed around town: across from the pavilion at Gorey Civic Square; on the Paul Funge Boulevard; and on Main Street at the Ulster Bank.
Caring for the environment is at the heart of our work in Gorey Tidy Towns, and we felt that these refill stations would help people reduce their dependence on single use plastics.
They were part-funded by a €3,000 Community Enhancement grant, while Gorey Kilmuckridge Municipal District paid for the balance, and the ground and installation works.
They were manufactured by Kent Stainless in Wexford. Buying locally and supporting Wexford jobs is a top priority, so it was a no-brainer when Kent Stainless said they could manufacture a quality product at a price that meant we could actually install more than just one.
Also on the day, we distributed 400 trees as part of our Gorey 400 Trees project. These were then planted by householders across North Wexford. The recipients signed up to take either a Birch; Mountain Ash; Apple (Eater or Cooker); or Native Oak (for larger areas).
We’re very grateful to Cliona Connolly of the environment section in County Hall for sorting the trees for us, and to the Gorey district office staff for their work on both these projects.
The Gorey 400 Trees project is a great way to get the wider public to take action to improve biodiversity and to combat climate change by helping reduce carbon emissions.
Also on the day, Kate Kos unveiled her new mural at the Civic Square. It highlights the scenic beauty of North Wexford’s beaches. This work was made possible thanks to a community enhancement grant.
