Wexford County Council & Love Gorey in conjunction with Gorey Chamber of Commerce is delighted to announce the switching on of Gorey’s Christmas Lights on Saturday, 23rd November. This yearly event has gathered a tremendous following and is seen as the official start of the Christmas Season in Gorey. This annual event is something that both young and old look forward to as we welcome Santa back to Gorey for the occasion.
The Christmas Lights Committee consisting of Members of the business community, the Chamber of Commerce and Gorey-Kilmuckridge Municipal District have worked tirelessly over the past year, holding numerous meetings to ensure the continued success of this wonderful event. The ‘Big Switch On’ is supported by many local groups including Gorey Ukes, Gorey Youth Needs, Santa’s Little Helpers from Gorey Little Theatre, Gorey Tidy Towns Committee and Gorey Men’s Shed who all assist with the entertainment and management of the event on the night.
Work began in late summer to prepare the town for the Christmas lights and from early November electricians & County Council Staff have been working hard to ensure the festive atmosphere of the town is ready for ‘The Big Switch On’.
Along with Mrs. Claus, Santa will travel up Main Street in his sleigh and is very much looking forward to seeing all the boys and girls before his busy night on the 24th December! Escorting Santa on his journey are the fabulous Goldwing riders who will ensure his safe arrival to greet everyone from the stage. Prior to his arrival entertainment will be provided by Santa’s Little Helpers and a performance of some festive cheer from Gorey Ukes.
We welcome back South East Radio’s Dave Redmond who will act as MC and entertainment will begin from 6:45pm while the crowds excitedly await the arrival of Santa Claus.
Entertainment in the town will continue each weekend to create festive spirt for shoppers and visitors after The ‘Big Switch On’, right up to Christmas.
This year promises to be a bigger and better event under the management of Gorey-Kilmuckridge Municipal District and has become a huge favourite with families, with crowds increasing year on year to add to the wonderful atmosphere.
This event is seen as the start of the busiest shopping season in the calendar and assists in promoting Gorey as a shopping destination. Local school children will also be visible during the lead up to Christmas performing carols and adding to the festive spirit in the town. The Christmas Market is of great importance to the town of Gorey both from a retail perspective and as a community event. Throughout December there are a number of initiatives to encourage shopping in the area with the “Elf Selfie” from Gorey Chamber of Commerce, a Social Media Campaign by Love Gorey, the annual Christmas Windows Competition taking place on Saturday, December 14th and the Christmas Jumpers Competition taking place on Saturday, 21st December!
The Big Switch on for Gorey will take place on Saturday, 23rd November as we welcome Santa to Gorey Town to officially turn on our beautiful Christmas lights!
Let’s make this an even bigger and better event. Don’t miss out on what we promise will be a magical evening for all involved!
