Malawi is one of the poorest countries in the world and has a population of 16 million people. It is estimated that 5.1% of the population has asthma and yet there are no programmes for the prevention and control of asthma.
The Palms GP Surgery has been developing initiatives to improve the care of asthma and other conditions. They hold monthly online web conferences to discuss clinical cases and update clinical care plans and protocols.
Mzuzu Central Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for the Northern region of Malawi. Approximately 2,500 people with asthma attend their services. Basic medications are commonly not available. For example, salbutamol inhalers (blue relievers) were only available 100 days out of the last 365 days and steroid inhalers needed to prevent asthma attacks were available 30 days out of 365 days.
Funds raised will support the training of clinical staff in Malawi, supply of equipment and medications and research into the better management of these conditions in Africa. Further information at www.thepalmssurgery.com.
