Culture Night 2024 Returns to Gorey! 🎉

Mark your calendars for Friday, September 20th, as Culture Night lights up Gorey with a vibrant array of free events, performances, and workshops that promise something for everyone! From early afternoon until late evening, enjoy arts, dance, heritage, music, talks, and demonstrations across various venues, cafés, and artist spaces throughout the town and surrounding areas. Here’s a glimpse of what’s happening:

🎨 Eoin O’Connor Gallery, Esmonde St Gorey (17:30 – 19:30)
Meet the Artist:
Eoin O’Connor will be in his gallery, working on his latest piece and answering your questions about his techniques, inspirations, and work. The gallery is wheelchair accessible, and guide or support animals are welcome.

📚 Book Reading with Mick O’Callaghan  (18:00 – 20:30)
Laurence Murphy & Sons, Main St Gorey:
Join Mick O’Callaghan as he reads excerpts from his memoir “The Boy Who Kicked the Nun.” Enjoy light refreshments and special guest performers in this intimate setting.  Music on the night will be performed by Jazz Token and they will play jazz standards and instrumentals from the swing era to the nineteen sixties with a more modern flavour – from Cole Porter and Duke Ellington to Horace Silver and Sonny Rollins

Lu and Mol, Esmonde St Gorey (18:00 – 20:00):
Visit Esmonde St and the beautiful Lu & Mo for jewellry-making demonstrations with Aine Breen and Ale Walsh, live music by Will and Leah

🎶 Ceol Mo Chroí Culture Club  (19:00 – 21:30)
The Book Café:
An intergenerational evening of traditional song, music, poetry, and dance with Rachel Uí Fhaoláin and John Ó Faoláin. Come support the Irish language and immerse yourself in the rich cultural atmosphere.

🎥 Seal Rescue Ireland presents ‘Song of the Sea  (18:00 – 20:00)
Movies @ Gorey:
Enjoy a screening of the beloved Cartoon Saloon film “Song of the Sea,” inspired by Irish folklore, hosted by Seal Rescue Ireland. Meet the team, learn about seal conservation, and enjoy this family-friendly movie.

🖌️ Life Drawing Session Gorey Art Collective, Trillium House (18:00 – 21:30)
Gorey Art Collective, Trillium House:
Try your hand at life drawing with a model dressed in period costume. All materials are provided, and artists will be on hand to guide you. Explore working artist spaces and chat with the talented members of the Collective.

🪡Beginner’s Dry Needle Felting Workshop with Trish Middleton  (18:00 – 20:00)
Kate’s Coffee Shop, Kilmuckridge :
Led by local artist Trish Middleton, this workshop offers a mindful introduction to dry needle felting. Kits are provided, and booking is essential as spaces are limited.

Saint Michael’s Church :Discover the history of Saint Michael’s Church with exhibitions, guided tours, and a showcase of the ancient art of iconography. No booking required; just drop by!

Cultural Celebrations:
Join GSA for live music, film screenings, interactive art workshops, and more. Drop-in events and booked workshops celebrate diversity, youth engagement, and community spirit.

🎵 Voices of Gorey Community Choir Performance  (18:00 – 19:00)
Gorey Library  : 
Voices of Gorey Community Choir headline a series of events planned for the Gorey Library on Culture Night from 6pm with the choir performing at 7pm. Voices of Gorey Community Choir is a brand new, all-female community choir that is providing an opportunity for women to come together to sing and socialise. On Culture Night, they will perform some of their songs for you under the direction of Musical Director, Emma Hughes. Voices of Gorey is composed of 100 women from Gorey and its surrounds and they aim to develop social connections, a sense of community and a feeling of belonging while engaging in the joy of group singing. Why not come along and experience the joy of communal singing for yourself!

🎸 Gorey Ukes Sing-Along (18:00 – 19:00)
Main Street, Gorey, outside Partridges :
Sing and dance along with Gorey Ukes outside Partridges Café for a fun, family-friendly music session.

🎵 Traditional Irish Music seisiún  (21:30 – late)
The Ashdown Park Hotel:
Enjoy  a lively traditional Irish music session from  9:30 pm as part of Culture Night in Gorey! Immerse yourself in the captivating sounds from talented local musicians who will celebrate Ireland’s rich musical heritage. Whether you’re a long-time trad fan or new to the tunes, this is the perfect way to experience the heart and soul of Irish culture in an authentic setting. Grab a pint, tap your feet, and enjoy an unforgettable night of music and craic!

🍷 Wexford Normandy Cultural Association Talk by John Nangle  (18:00 – 19:00)
The Wine Buff :
Learn about the Esmonde family’s connection to the Norman invasion, hosted by the Wexford Normandy Cultural Association, followed by a glass of French wine.

🌸 Suantrai Female Vocal Ensemble (20:00 – 20:45):  Christchurch, Gorey Be transported on a musical journey through medieval times, Irish culture, and beyond with the enchanting voices of Suantrai, directed by Sara Clancy. Limited seating, so be sure to reserve your spot.

🎵 CCE Gorey Ballygarrett (20:00 – late)
Loch Garman Arms :
Fresh from their Fleadh Cheoil performances join this local group for their popular traditional Irish Music sessions and some craic agus cheoil!
