The Fr. Redmond Monument

Nestled in the heart of the bustling market town of Gorey, part of Ireland’s Ancient East, lies a restored gem of historical and cultural significance: the Fr. John Redmond Monument.

This poignant site atop Gorey Hill stands as a tribute to the turbulent times of the 1798 Rebellion and the story of Fr. John Redmond, a courageous figure who faced injustice during that era.

In October 2024, the dedicated volunteers of Gorey Tidy Towns, along with TUS and CE scheme workers, undertook a transformative project to restore this historic treasure. Years of overgrowth had hidden the monument, but their hard work has once again opened the path for visitors to experience this remarkable site. The team cleared the laneway, refreshed the monument with a fresh coat of paint, and meticulously restored the lettering of its inscription.

Visitors can now enjoy a scenic walk to the top of Gorey Hill, starting from the laneway beside James Tomkins’ showroom at the McCurtain Street and Carnew Road junction, or from the back of Ardmore Estate. The trek is not only a journey through history but also offers breathtaking views of Gorey and the surrounding North Wexford countryside.

The Fr. Redmond Monument tells a powerful story. In June 1798, Fr. John Redmond, a curate from Clough, was wrongfully accused of orchestrating an uprising. Despite his efforts to prevent looting during the rebellion, he was tried and executed alongside Patrick Carroll atop Gorey Hill. Today, the restored monument honors their memory and serves as a testament to Gorey’s rich historical tapestry.

Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a nature lover, or simply seeking a memorable day out, the Fr. Redmond Monument is a must-visit landmark.

Step back in time, enjoy the picturesque surroundings, and connect with a story that shaped the spirit of this vibrant town and is maintained in tribute to our history and heritage by the hard work and dedicated of the Gorey Tidy Towns Group.
