Spring 2025 Updates from Gorey Tidy Towns
After a busy winter for the Gorey Tidy Towns group, our attention turned in recent weeks to the changing of the season and the early signs of new growth. We also took the opportunity to plant new trees in our urban landscape including six whitebeams in An Choill Draíochta on the Coach Road. These were supplied by Wexford County Council’s Trees for Wexford programme.
The highlight of the year so far was the planting of another special tree. Gorey Tidy Towns were delighted to join forces with East Coast Samaritans to plant a silver birch tree in the woodland. A site was specially chosen along the path where a bench will be installed so people can sit by the tree, take time out of their day, and remember their loved ones in a quiet moment. This was the first of ten trees planted by the East Coast Samaritans and Tidy Towns groups along the coast to celebrate their tenth anniversary. Each tree is accompanied by a plaque sponsored by Wicklow Rotary Club.
The trees can be found in Gorey, Kilmuckridge, Enniscorthy, Arklow, Bunclody, Riverchapel, Avoca, Wicklow, Greystones and Aughrim. They were planted in memory of volunteers who have passed, as well as family members, loved ones and friends. Huge thanks were sent by the organisers to all the volunteers who supported this initiative. There was a great turnout for the ceremony in Gorey with representatives from Gorey Tidy Towns, East Coast Samaritans, and Gorey/Kilmuckridge Municipal District in attendance. Special thanks were sent to Wexford County Council for donating the silver birch tree and the bench which will be installed at a later date.
The work of Gorey Tidy Towns continues. From planting flowers and trees, to maintaining green spaces, organising clean-up drives, and visiting schools, these volunteers and scheme workers foster community pride and ensure that Gorey remains beautiful, welcoming and vibrant.
