Founding and Early YearsThe Wexford Eagles were founded in 2015 and played their first competitive tackle football season in 2016 in the IAFL2 division. Under Coach Kevin Klatt, the Eagles had an outstanding inaugural season, going unbeaten in the regular season and reaching the IAFL2 Bowl Game. However, they suffered a heartbreaking last-play defeat to the Donegal Derry Vipers.

Biggest On-Field Achievement
The club’s greatest success came in 2023, winning the AFI Division 2 Championship. This victory was particularly significant as it followed a difficult 2022 season, during which the club folded and was automatically relegated from Division 1. The 2023 championship marked an incredible comeback, showcasing the team’s resilience and determination.

Regional Representation
As the only kitted American football team in the South East, the Eagles attract players and members from across the region, offering a unique opportunity for local athletes to get involved in the sport.

Growing the Game
The Eagles are committed to expanding American football in the South East by welcoming players of all experience levels. The club has also explored youth development and non-contact flag football programs, ensuring the sport continues to grow at all levels. So watch this space!

Honouring Coach Billy Anderson
In 2019, the Eagles suffered an unimaginable loss when Coach Billy Anderson tragically passed away en route to meet the team bus for a game. Since then, the club has hosted an annual memorial event, ranging from a 24-hour relay run to the now-established Billy Laughs Comedy Night, honouring Billy’s memory and raising funds for the club and Billy’s young son.

Billy was not only a beloved coach but also a well-known figure on Ireland’s stand-up comedy circuit, making this event a fitting tribute to his legacy.

Community and Events
The Eagles are deeply committed to engaging with the local community through fundraising and social events. The annual “Billy Laughs” Comedy Night has become a flagship event, bringing some of Ireland’s top comedians to Gorey while celebrating Billy’s legacy.

In addition, the team runs other major fundraising events, including:
• The annual Thanksgiving Table Quiz
• The Super Bowl Raffle

These events not only strengthen the club but also bring the wider community together in support of the Eagles.

Training & Facilities
The Eagles train at Castletown Liam Mellows GAA, with a strong emphasis on strength, conditioning, and game execution. The club is always recruiting and provides a structured training environment for both beginners and experienced players.

Gameday Venue:
Home games take place in the scenic Town Park, and the Eagles are gearing up for four big home games in 2025:
• 23/03 – vs. Cill Dara Crusaders
• 19/04 – vs. Louth Mavericks
• 18/05 – vs. Dublin Rhinos
• 01/06 – vs. Northwest Vipers

Sponsorships & Partnerships
The Eagles are grateful for the incredible support of local businesses and sponsors. In 2025, the club’s primary sponsor is Breen’s Bar, which has already hosted several fantastic events for the team.

The Eagles are always looking to build new partnerships with businesses that want to support local sport and grow American football in Ireland.

Looking Forward
After a strong 2024 season under Coach Klatt, in which the Eagles made the Division 1 Playoffs, the team is now focused on taking the next step in 2025.

With a new coaching staff, led by:
• Ross McCooey – Head Coach
• Ben Sullivan – Defensive Coordinator
• Trevor Smith – Offensive Coordinator

… and a strong roster, the Eagles are aiming for a playoff push and promotion to the Shamrock Bowl Conference.

The journey continues with a relentless attitude – and 2025 promises to be a season to remember!
